Where is Hairy Maclary?

A few reminders:
Library day continues to be on Thursday. All children should be returning their library book each week.  Also keep returning the Progress Folders from the Conferences. Thank you.

This week we used the story "Hairy Maclary's" Scatter Cat to work on positional language.  The children hid pictures of Hairy Maclary around the room and they had to use directions to help their partner find him.

We have also practised left, right, half and quarter turns this week.  

Right hands up.

As you know your child is doing the Stepping Out programme at school. To help reinforce messages could you please go for a walk with your child and count the number of driveways that you pass. Remember to stop, look and listen before you cross a driveway. Thank you.

Just to give you some forward notice: Room 5 and Room 8 will be hosting the next school assembly. Please put September 8 into your diary.

A very big thank you to everyone who came to the student - parent - teacher conferences this week!

I was proud of the way the children were able to show their work and explain their writing and reading goals. The adults were very supportive and engaged with their child throughout the whole process, so well done to each and everyone of you.

Please return the Progress Folder when you have finished looking through it. Remember to take out the Term 3 newsletter and maths help sheet first.

This week in maths we are studying position and direction.
Encourage your child to use language such as over, under, between, left, right, high, low, near, far to describe where objects are in relation to each other.

Ask your child to describe the path they would follow to get from one end of the garden to their room. Or how can you get from your television to the kitchen sink? We will learn about half and quarter turns, and left and right.

Our Super Heros!

On the last day of Term 2, the Year One classes celebrated 100 days of school.  In Room 5, we have a Super Hero called Zero the Hero. We were very excited when he visited us on our special zero day. 

We did lots of fun things in the morning, making our 100 day crown, building 100 brick towers and patterns and rolling a dice to 100.

Our other Hero, Mrs Barlow, takes us for Music on Mondays.

Ramp Experiments

We have been learning about friction and force for the last couple of weeks.  We have also learnt about fair testing. On Monday, we looked at how we need to repeat an experiment to see if the results are the same. We also know that we can only change one thing to make it a fair test.

Later on in the week we got into pairs and made two ramps with only one difference. Some pairs choose to make the slope heights different, while other pairs kept the slope the same but used a different material on their second ramp. We had fun testing our ramps and seeing which one was faster and went further.
This week we are going to make one ramp but use different things to see which one has the most friction.

Rugby League

For the last four weeks we have been having rugby league lessons with Coach Sam.  We have learnt to make a big `W' with our hands, look at the ball when passing and squishing the ball when we put it down. We have really enjoyed working with our team!

May the Force be with you

This week was Science week and it started off with a push and a pull as we investigated different everyday items that use a push or pull movement. In small groups we rotated around five activities. They were:
1. pushing rubber bands onto geoboards
2. a pulley system
3. pushing a ball
4. pulling blu tack
5. pushing blocks together

On Wednesday, we had a Science in the Van show. The Three Billy Goats Gruff used pushing, pulling and friction to move the Troll off the bridge to get to the other side.

On Friday, we had our very own Room Five Scientists show their science homework projects. We had a great range of experiments and information gathering. Well done!

Keeping Ourselves Safe

Welcome to Eden who completes are classroom for the year.

This week, Constable Harwood came in and talked to us about using our cell phones to dial for an emergency. Please show your child how they can access 111 on your cell phone.  He also talked about what to do if someone tries to get them into a car. We practised saying 'Help, help, help!" Lastly he reinforced the need to know where they live. Please continue to talk to your child about their letterbox number, street and suburb.

Next week we start our unit on forces - push and pull. We have the Science Van coming in on Wednesday for this. Please send in $4 if yo haven't already and keep working on those Science Projects at home. They need to be brought in on Friday. Good luck.
